The Navy and Coast Guard do not list a single AFQT cutoff on their public websites. Both evaluate applicants using a combination of AFQT and job-specific composite scores. The Army is the most accessible at the published minimum, but your job options at a 31 are severely limited.
The GED and Credential Gap
If you do not have a high school diploma, the bar goes up significantly. The Air Force requires a 50 with a GED, compared to 31 with a diploma. Marines also require a 50 with a GED. The Air Force will consider applicants with no diploma or GED if they score 65 or above and have at least 15 college credits.
That credential gap costs you 19 points in the Air Force. If you are close to finishing your diploma, complete it before you test. The math is straightforward: a diploma plus a 35 gets you in. A GED plus a 45 does not.
Below the Minimum
Scoring below 31 does not necessarily end the conversation. The Army's Future Soldier Prep Course offers a structured path for applicants who fall short. Score between 21 and 30 on the AFQT, and you enter a 90-day academic program designed to prepare you for a retest. According to officialasvab.com, applicants who score in AFQT Category IIIA or higher (50 or above) may qualify for enlistment incentives. Below 50, you are eligible to enlist. Above 50, you become eligible for bonuses.
This is not recruiter folklore. Category IIIA is the official incentive-eligibility floor set by the Department of Defense. The practical meaning: signing bonuses, choice of duty station, education benefits like tuition assistance or loan repayment, and guaranteed MOS slots in your contract become available to applicants scoring 50 and above. Below 50, you take what the branch offers. Above 50, you negotiate.

Should You Retake the ASVAB? A Decision Framework
The military uses your most recent score, not your highest. Retake unprepared and your previous score disappears.
Retake Rules
The waiting periods are fixed: 1 month after your first attempt, 1 month after your second, then 6 months between every subsequent attempt. Your most recent score is the only one that counts. There is no option to fall back to a previous result.

Took the ASVAB in High School? Your Score May Already Count
If you took the ASVAB through your high school's Career Exploration Program (CEP) in 11th or 12th grade, that score is valid for military enlistment for two years from the test date.
One difference to know: the school ASVAB excludes the Assembling Objects subtest, which means your composite scores may differ slightly from a MEPS version. This does not affect your AFQT, since AFQT uses only four subtests (VE, AR, MK), none of which is Assembling Objects.
Taking the school ASVAB commits you to nothing. There is zero military obligation. But those scores are available to recruiters, and if your score is competitive, you already have a usable result without scheduling a MEPS visit.
